Calcined Alumina

Calcined alumina powder is a high-purity aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) material made by heating aluminum hydroxide at high temperatures. It is produced through the calcination (“heating”) of alumina to various temperatures. By controlling the calcination temperatures and time, the properties of the alumina can be controlled. Calcined alumina is therefore utilized in a variety of industrial applications including Structural ceramics, Technical ceramics, Polishing compounds for plastic, metal, and glass, Fillers for Rubber and Plastics, Friction – anti slip, Refractories, Paint & Coatings and Thermal Spray Powders.

Product Overview

Calcined Alumina (α-Al2O3) is produced by calcining aluminum hydroxide or precursor alumina under controlled temperature to form stable alpha phase with low soda and low loss on ignition. Our Calcined Alumina powder features consistent hardness, high whiteness, and excellent chemical stability. It flows well, disperses well, and sinters predictably across different forming methods.

If you need to compare calcined alumina with other alumina grades before purchasing, see our full product range here: Alumina Powder Product Series.

If you work with different alumina materials and want a quick comparison of all major grades, you can check our full guide here: Types of Alumina – Grades, Properties & Applications.

Applications of Calcined Alumina Powder

1. Ceramics and Advanced Ceramics

Calcined alumina serves as a fundamental raw material for producing spark plugs, cutting tools, and wear-resistant ceramics. Its fine particle size and high density ensure strength and durability.

2. Refractories

Used in high-temperature furnace linings, castables, and bricks. Its resistance to heat and corrosion makes it ideal for harsh environments.

3. Polishing and Abrasives

Due to its hardness (9 on Mohs scale), it is a preferred material for polishing optical lenses, metals, and semiconductors.

For polishing-focused users, we also provide a detailed guide on how calcined alumina performs in metal, glass and semiconductor finishing: Calcined Alumina Polishing.

4. Catalyst Carriers

In the petrochemical industry, high-purity calcined alumina is used as a support for catalytic reactions, offering high surface area and stability.

For ultra-high density or thermal shock resistance, see related grades such as Tabular Alumina.

Grades & Particle Size

We supply multiple Calcined Alumina grades. Choose by particle size, purity, and application. Custom cuts are available from our Factory.

  • Microfine: D50 ≈ 0.4–1.0 μm for precision polishing and fine ceramics.
  • Fine: D50 ≈ 1–3 μm for ceramic forming and dense bodies.
  • Medium: D50 ≈ 3–6 μm for refractories and general ceramics.
  • Coarse: D50 > 6 μm for special blends and castables.

How to Choose Calcined Alumina

Match grade to process and end-use. Use this quick checklist:

  • Polishing: Choose microfine D50 (0.4–1.0 μm) with narrow PSD for smooth finish.
  • Ceramics: Pick fine to medium grades by density and shrinkage targets.
  • Refractories: Medium to coarse grades for packing and thermal stability.
  • Dielectric/Insulation: Low-soda grade with very low Fe.
  • Slurry needs: Consider treated surfaces for dispersion and high solid loading.
